BARNARD CASTLE
The historic market town of Barnard Castle is just 6 miles from The Stables and well worth a visit. The impressive medieval castle stands dramatically above the River Tees, managed by English Heritage. The town also has a lovely range of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, making for a very enjoyable afternoon out.
RABY CASTLE
Raby Castle is a magnificent 14th-century fortress set in a beautiful deer park, and one of the finest castles in the north of England. With stunning state rooms, beautiful gardens and plenty to explore for all the family, it makes for a truly memorable day out, just a short drive from The Stables.
HIGH FORCE
England’s most powerful waterfall, High Force sees the River Tees plunge 21 metres over the Great Whin Sill in a truly breathtaking display. Nearby Low Force is an equally beautiful spot, and the walk between the two along the Pennine Way is a wonderful way to spend a morning. A short drive up the dale from The Stables.
DURHAM CITY
The historic city of Durham is home to one of the finest Norman cathedrals in Europe, a stunning castle, and a beautiful riverside setting. With wonderful restaurants, independent shops and museums, it makes for a superb day out and is just over an hour from The Stables.
HAMSTERLY FOREST
Hamsterly Forest is a beautiful Forestry Commission woodland with miles of walking and cycling trails, mountain bike routes, and a Go Ape adventure course. A wonderful place to spend a day in the fresh air, whatever your age, and just 15 minutes from The Stables.
